I don't think the loan system breaks the game for me, it just REALLY doesn't want you to take a loan unless you're absolutely sure. If you have a save to before you took the loan, you could potentially go back there, I've reloaded saves that were an entire season back because I went down a path that didn't work out. You have to assume they live in a country with that same system. I believe there are certain countries where you don't have the option for early settlement.
